'Free, Fair and Transparent Elections', That Is the Best Legacy You Can Leave Behind - Mahama to Akufo-Addo

John Dramani Mahama has impressed on President Akufo-Addo to do everything within his power to ensure a free, fair, and transparent election come December 7.

Former President and flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), in his view, believes that the best legacy the incumbent President can leave behind after his tenure is to ensure that the elections are not rigged.

“The best legacy he can leave this country is to superintend over a peaceful, transparent, and credible election,” former President Mahama said.

During a sod cutting ceremony for a multipurpose Jakpa Palace in Damongo in the Gonja land on Sunday April, 28, former President Mahama admonished the youth in the Gonja Land to embrace hard work and work tirelessly for peace to reign in the Gonja land.

In a response to Akufo-Addo’s statement suggesting that, he does not want someone he defeated twice to succeed him, Mr. Mahama stated that the power to choose President Akufo-Addo’s successor in the elections does not rest with the President, noting that Kings are chosen by God and not by the whims and caprices of men.

The president said he cannot have the NDC flagbearer, whom he defeated twice, succeed him after his tenure ends on January 7, 2025.

"Before the election is held, I am going to come here and pay my proper goodbye to you and thank you for the cooperation that I received from you when I was president. God willing, when I come, I will come with the man who is going to be my successor.”

President Akufo-Addo made it clear that he does not intend to transfer power to John Dramani Mahama, whom he defeated and removed from office in 2016.

“Wa Naa, you know that the man I removed from the seat, I cannot have him as my successor and as a traditional ruler, you understand what I am saying."

“Our country is known as the pacesetter for democratic government across the entire continent of Africa. I want to assure you that this year we are going to maintain that reputation. But I need your support and cooperation.”

“I want us to work together to make sure that the peace and stability of our country is maintained all through the electioneering period and after,” he added.

In his response, former President John Mahama said, “I wish to remind him that it is God who makes rulers and, he can never ever be the one to choose his successor, it is God who will choose the successor."
